Jeez Louise, this is a monster. A 23CD box that chronicles eight complete shows from the Dead’s 1990 tour – the one before Brent Mydland passed out – and including the set they played with Branford Marsalis’ sax wizardry decorating Dark Star at the Nassau Coliseum. It’s a colossal undertaking that will delight the Dead aficionado (and probably send his spouse into rehab).
The guts of it is, er, all your old faves the likes of Bertha, Jack Straw, Big River and Cassidy, with some extremely pleasant surprises including a rattling assault on The Beatles’ Revolution, Traffic’s Dear Mr Fantasy and The Band’s The Weight, plus many other allusions to Paul McCartney and the Stones en route. Hell, they even resurrect Loose Lucy from the great Mars Hotel era – and, more to the point, they’re on top form. Garcia was off the Persian for a while (not that long, actually) and his vocals pass muster, while Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Brent and the drummer boys instil a vigour and purpose to the performances, which should delight the fanbase as dotage approaches with a spring in the step. A truncated 3CD highlights package is also available for the weekend hippy.
